Media Statement: Deputy Minister Skwatsha handed over house rebuild by the Department for destitute grandmother - 19 July 2017

Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Mr Mcebisi Skwatsha, today (19 July 2017) handed over a house to the Ratombo Family built by the Department, as part of the Mandela Day activities. The event took place at Lwamondo, Mvelaphanda Village near Thohoyandou under Thulamela Municipality in the Vhembe District, Limpopo Province.

The newly built 108.62 square meter house has of 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, a lounge and two verandas. It is electrified and connected to grid.

Handing over the house to Mrs Nomsa Catherine Ratombo, Deputy Minister Mcebisi Skwatsha said the initiative shows that government cares about the wellbeing of its citizens. ‘After we learnt about the tragedy of Mrs Ratombo we made a conscious decision as government to intervene and help her by building a new house. We wanted to return the smile and joy back to the Ratombo’s family”, the deputy minister concluded.

Deputy Minster Skwatsha was accompanied by the Limpopo Acting Mayor of Vhembe, Councillor Rudzani Ludere and the Local Mayor of Thulamela Avhashoni Tshifhango.

For her part Mrs Ratombo said she was very happy and excited to get into her newly built home. “I prayed for this day and now it has arrived I am over the moon. Now my children have a roof over their heads. We will now sleep in peace tonight”, she added.

I would like to thank government for building me this beautiful house. Now me, my children and grandchildren have a house again”, she concluded.

The elderly Mrs Ratombo 69 lost all her belongings and those of her grandchildren when her home burnt down in a fire as there was no one in the house at the time of fire in 2013. It has been difficult for the family to rebuild the house as the owner is a sickly old lady who depends on grants for survival.

The matter was referred to the Minister Gugile Nkwinti for possible intervention. In response to the family’s plight, the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform embarked on a project to rebuild the house which has now been completed.
