The Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Mrs. KC Mashego Dlamini will, on Tuesday 31 October 2017, engage women governance structures and beneficiaries of rural development and land reform programmes from all nine provinces in commemoration of the International Day of Rural Women in Bela Bela, Waterberg District, in Limpopo.
The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform joins the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of Rural Women (International Day of Rural Women is celebrated on the 15th of October annually) as a day to recognize the role of rural women in rural development and in agriculture.
The commemoration will take the format of a dialogue whereby women from established cooperatives and organizations at district level will be given an opportunity to interact with various stakeholders including National, Provincial and Local government and State Owned Enterprises to discuss areas of common interest and to provide platform for women to share their experiences, challenges and success stories.
The purpose of the event is to ensure the empowerment of rural women not only in their individual capacity but also as agents of change in their respective community.
The commemoration will among others look at progress made by women who are involved in agricultural, poverty eradication and food security activities as well as the involvement of the DRDLR into the socio-economic initiatives of women in rural areas.
Rural Women have benefitted and they continue to benefit from the department’s efforts to improve its programs and policies to ensure that women in rural communities enjoy a better life. It also recognizes that a lot more has to be done.
