Deputy Minister Mcebisi Skwatsha will be celebrating Mandela day with the communities of Phillipi and Bonteheuwel/Netreg
The Deputy Minister of Rural Development Fand Land Reform, Mr Mcebisi Skwatsha will on today, 18 July 2016 be celebrating the International Mandela day with the communities of Phillipi (Marcus Garvey) and Bonteheuwel/Netreg.

The activities will be as follows:

1.1 Revamping of an RDP house

After the living condition of an 81 year old widower - Mr Mxolisi Tyewu - was brought to his attention, the Deputy Minister, as a caring person, decided to do something about the situation.

Mr Tyewu stays alone in the one-room house, two of his daughters passed away some time ago and a third one left him a few years ago due to a serious health challenge. Like other RDP houses in the area, the toilet is situated in the front yard with plastic as walls.

The Deputy Minister has mobilised building material in order to improve the living conditions, thus ensuring that there will be comfort and dignity for this aged gentleman. The house will be partitioned so that the living room and kitchen are separated from the bed-room, the outside wall will be plastered and thereafter painted, a sink will be installed inside and the toilet will be constructed with bricks and mortar.

This work will be done in partnership with the Department of Correctional Services who will avail skilled inmates.

The Deputy Minister will be at the house at 10H00. The address is:
Road 29, House Number 8908, Marcus Garvey,Phillipi.

1.2 Rosewood Food-garden

After being approached by Mrs M Booi of Netreg to lend a hand at her community garden which she started in 2015 the Deputy Minister did not think twice.

The matter of poverty alleviation and food security are issues which are very central in the mandate of the Departments he leads and therefore felt compelled to assist. He then engaged Abahlali Developments, which is a competent NPO that works
within the space of food-gardens to give guidance and advice on how to make the
garden functional.

The Deputy Minister will dedicate 67 minutes of his time clearing the site and
preparing it for planting and later he will be handing over implements, seedlings,
protective clothing and manure to the project.

The Deputy Minister will be at the food-garden at 11H00.It is situated at Rosewood
Primary School,(corner of Bonteheuwel Avenue and Redberry street,Bonteheuwel).
