The Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, will on Saturday, 14th July 2018 join the Imikhonde community in the celebration of the return of their land at Ntabankulu Magisterial District, Umzimvubu Local Municipality, Alfred Nzo District in the Eastern Cape. The minister will officially preside over the ceremony which will mark the return of the land after 51 years.
The claimant community occupied the land under an implied traditional system and had beneficial occupational rights which they derived as the members of a traditional community and had stayed on the land for many decades before dispossession occurred and most of them issued with Permission to Occupy (PTO).
Imikhonde community lost beneficial occupational rights to the between 1967 and 1978 as a result of the implementation of the Transkei Agricultural Development Act No. 10 of 1966.
The claim was in the Land Claims Court which issued an order for its settlement and it was finally settled on the 29th May 2015. A process of transferring the land to the claimants resumed and the Title Deed was finally registered on behalf of Imikhonde Communal Property Association (CPA) on the 01st March 2018.
