The Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) Gugile Nkwinti will on 4th March 2017 handover two (2) farms to former labour tenants in the Nkangala District in Mpumalanga.
The Paardeplaats and Rietfontein farms have been purchased by the state for the settlement of the beneficiaries as part of efforts to address the plight of farm workers who were classified as labour tenants by past laws and thus subjected to discriminatory practices often resulting in their eviction from the farms on which they worked and lived.
The farms, thirty nine (39) and three hundred and thirty eight (338) hectares in extent respectively, were acquired for the purpose of securing tenure for 6 labour tenants and their families and a further 59 persons living on the farm. Some of the beneficiaries have been residing on the properties for more than 10 years and therefore take on the status of "long term occupier".
The minister will be accompanied by the Nkangala District Executive Mayor - Cllr L Malatjie and Emakhazeni Local Municipality Executive Mayor – Cllr T Ngwenya.
